Keep the focus on the value of each complete side. The equal sign is a relationship, not an instruction to calculate.
1Value before vocabulary
In Build mode, ask students to cover the center symbol and name each side’s total. Then ask whether the equation is true and how the counters prove it.
2Predict the tip
Change just one addend. Before moving the slider, ask which pan will drop and why. A level beam represents equal values; a tilt shows which value is greater.
3Make the unknown meaningful
Use all three challenge types: a missing addend, a missing minuend, and an unknown on the right. For guesses below 3 in 5 = □ − 3, the lab says “not enough to take away” and never creates negative counters.
CCSS alignment: 1.OA.D.7 — understand the meaning of the equal sign and determine whether equations are true or false. 1.OA.D.8 — determine the unknown whole number in an addition or subtraction equation.
