Make the thinking visible

Use the ten frames to connect the physical move with each part of the equation.

1

Predict before playing

Ask, “How many more does the first frame need?” Students can find the empty cells before moving any counters.

2

Name both parts

When counters leave the second frame, connect the number bond to the equation: 6 becomes 2 and 4. The total number of counters never changes.

3

Compare with no regrouping

Try 7 + 2. Because the sum is already within ten, the lab will not invent a split or move counters unnecessarily.

CCSS 1.OA.C.6 alignment: students use the make-a-ten strategy to add within 20, including decomposing one addend into the amount needed to reach ten and the amount left over.
